“is fashion a hobby”

You often hear of the design aspect of the field and see the fashion shows that are hosted by producers and designers, but many neglect the fact that there is a fashion merchandising field that has many sophisticated and exciting career paths as well.

Description Girls’ fashion in 1961 featured stretchy tapered pants paired with patterned sweaters, oriental shirts, and tops with cute embroidery. Dresses that could be worn several ways with aprons and jumpers were also popular. As were slim skirts with tab details.

London has long been the capital of the United Kingdom fashion industry and has a wide range of foreign designs which have integrated with modern British styles. Typical, British design is smart but innovative yet recently has become more and more unconventional, fusing traditional styles with modern techniques. Vintage styles play an important role in the British fashion and styling industry. Stylists regularly ‘mix and match’ the old with the new, which gives British style that unique, bohemian aesthetic that many of the other fashion capitals try to imitate. Irish fashion (both design and styling) is also heavily influenced by fashion trends from Britain. Famous British brands and designers include Burberry, Paul Smith, Alfred Dunhill, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, John Richmond, Neil Barrett, Matthew Williamson, Hussein Chalayan, Gareth Pugh, Stella McCartney, Mulberry, Thomas Pink and Vivienne Westwood.[12]

It helped that GQ and L’Uomo Vogue started putting players such as James on their covers. “They really put athletes on a pedestal,” Kalenderian says. “In the ’60s, the image of the perfect man was found at the movies. The archetypes of style were actors like Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and Robert Redford. Now young men look to social media, to Tumblr and Instagram, where they see athletes like Russell  Westbrook.”

“I just can’t justify the prices,” said Chantal Scott, a mother of a 5-year-old, who owns Livie & Boo, a children’s resale shop in Brooklyn. Having once worked for a luxury brand, she added, “I know how much things really cost.” She meant the standard markup, which for luxury brands is roughly 7.5 times cost. So if the price of a dress is $375, the cost is $50. By contrast, a vertical retailer — a chain like the Children’s Place — uses a 3.5 markup.

She had eyed the dress on a previous visit, and when U.A.L. announced through its Instagram account a 30 percent off “White Out Sale” on white garments, she rushed over. Ms. Clark reached around and fished out the tag that showed the original price: $3,500. U.A.L.’s price was $733, and the additional 30 percent off.

NASHVILLE — The novelist Ann Patchett, who lives in this city, has said that she brings out-of-town visitors to two places: the Parthenon, the replica of the ancient Greek structure in Centennial Park, and United Apparel Liquidators, or U.A.L. as devotees know it. Both are temples of a sort.

American fashions in the early years of the decade reflected the elegance of the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. In addition to tailored skirts, women wore Stiletto heel shoes and suits with short boxy jackets, and oversized buttons. Simple, geometric dresses, known as shifts, were also in style. For evening wear, full-skirted evening gowns were worn; these often had a low décolletage and close-fitting waists. For casual wear, capri trousers were the fashion for women and girls.[citation needed]

On the flip-side, but still just as punchy, you’ll find mix ‘n’ match ultra-pastels being adopted everywhere from New York to London and back again. Hippest when worn together in the weirdest combos possible: See Céline for the lemon, lilac, purple and beige formula we’d like to copy.

Typically, U.A.L. gets only a few of each garment, so if it’s not your size, you’re out of luck. And you have to be willing to hunt the racks and keep coming back. Some days it’s a gold mine, other times the store feels picked over.

After all, one hopes that there’s a reason, beyond blunt commerce and making happy customers, to do children’s clothes and that someone might be innovative, as Mr. James was with his sunsuits. By placing the seams and folds in a specific way, he actually emphasized the roundness of a child’s body.

Description Denim outfits were the way to go in 1955. Practical and comfortable leisure wear, denim jeans needed to be worn with a denim jacket. For school or important events teen boys could pick up a two piece suit featuring various tweed or corduroy textures and fun but subtle patterns and colors. For the younger boys sport suits and dressy outfits resembled miniature versions of what a father might wear in casual or formal settings.

Technology has made us comfortable with sharing everything, from late-night parties to relationship status; with tweeting thoughts in the middle of the night (if you are President Trump) or snaps of yourself in your lingerie (if you are Kim Kardashian); with the idea of dating on television for all to see. Ms. Greene said the move to dress in the opposite direction was in some ways “a reaction to that — almost the anti-Kardashianization.”

Women’s clothes took on a masculine militant look with the invention of shoulder pads. Every dress, blouse or jacket was fitted with shoulder pads that extended just past the edge of the shoulder. This made for a boxy or square neckline and shoulder angle. Sleeves were often puffed up a bit with gathers at the top and extended down to just above the elbow.

Designers have eschewed all other eras to focus very clearly on the 1980s. The silhouettes are all in place (think nipped waists, strong shoulders, long, lean legs), and the muses are ones you’ll instantly be able to imagine: Diana, Princess of Wales, continues to influence high-fashion places, with Off-White’s Virgil Abloh citing the late style icon as his inspiration for his spring collection.

The winners were a Burberry trench and kilt (“authentic”), the Stella knit tunic (“I would actually spend the money for this,” Ms. Ferrara said) and, despite the cost and some sewing faults, the Lanvin pieces. “It’s couture,” Mr. Rosen said.

He’s rare among professional athletes in that his world-class skills are contained within a normal-human-size body. At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, he can buy off the rack, which thrills designers, who don’t have to custom-make his clothes. Even as players embraced couture, many are gigantic, which stood as an obstacle to acceptance. “When I started, I had to beg—literally beg—for any designer to acknowledge my athletes’ existence,” Johnson says. “It wasn’t cool then. In fact, it was unheard of. Designers were so afraid of athletes’ proportions, so afraid their aesthetic wouldn’t translate onto these bodies that they didn’t understand.” She finally took to flying players to Paris and putting them before designers “to see how perfect their bodies are. These guys are beautiful, they’re relatable. Once they saw the players in their clothes, those two worlds came together.”

Cozy corduroy is making a comeback in 2018, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. After all, corduroy is basically just a textured form of velvet, and you know we love velvet. Better still, corduroy is a perfect trouser to transition between workwear and weekend wear.

A seamstress sews ready-to-wear or mass-produced clothing by hand or with a sewing machine, either in a garment shop or as a sewing machine operator in a factory. She (or he) may not have the skills to make (design and cut) the garments, or to fit them on a model.
