“where fashion began”

Love it or hate it, we predict that see-through clothing, bags, and shoes will be one of spring’s major trends. Thank Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, who for spring created a rain forest-esque set, complete with a waterfall. He dressed his models in plastic bombers, plastic bucket hats and plastic boots. Valentino, Balmain, CALVIN KLEIN 205W39 and Off-White also featured key pieces created in the synthetic material.
Sometime between ages five and seven, usually coinciding with school attendance, boys graduated to knickerbockers and had their hair cut.  Sailor suits and garments inspired by military uniforms were especially popular.  The design on the lower right of the Godey’s page (Figures 20-21) shows a suit for a boy of about four years reminiscent of a military jacket.  The suit features a vest and trousers, items specifically worn by boys.  It wasn’t until a boy was about twelve that he began to wear long trousers and dress more like a grown man.
“OK, I know this is a tad ‘naval gazing’ and potentially nepotistic, but he’s always the one guy I see around London Fashion Week, and ask him where he got what he’s wearing on a daily basis. And all that with constant jet lag.”

“Children in a Classroom.” Sepia aquatint with stipple. Drawn by T. Stohard, engraved by C. Knight, England, ca.1790. The children wear the clothing of the late eighteenth century – frock dresses for the girls and trouser suits for the boys. The engraver suggests society’s evolving attitude toward children by their lively postures and more comfortable clothing. Anonymous gift.G1971-3139.
It turned out that Abe’s minder had, possibly, made the wrong decision in choosing not to go to the Pigalle show. A few hours later, Abe showed up at the Picasso vibrating with excitement about the clothes he had seen and, even more, about the remarkable way they had been presented. Instead of the usual solemn palace or dark box pounding with electronica, instead of the usual runway, the Pigalle show had been presented outdoors, at the back of a museum, in a garden. It had taken the form of a faux wedding party, with musicians and a wedding canopy and little round café tables for all the “guests.” Food was served. The evening felt cool. Abe had sat with the people from GQ and been caught up in the night and the company and the beautiful clothes.
Technology has made us comfortable with sharing everything, from late-night parties to relationship status; with tweeting thoughts in the middle of the night (if you are President Trump) or snaps of yourself in your lingerie (if you are Kim Kardashian); with the idea of dating on television for all to see. Ms. Greene said the move to dress in the opposite direction was in some ways “a reaction to that — almost the anti-Kardashianization.”
“He’s just incredibly handsome. And along with a number of other great actors, he is tipped to be a contender for the next James Bond, which is hardly surprising.” Dean and Dan Caten, designers, DSquared2

Early last year, at a summit of East African heads of state, some of the regional leaders proposed a ban on the importation of secondhand clothing; English-speaking news sites such as Voices of Africa and CNN followed up by positing that old clothing from the U.K. and U.S. was creating a post-colonial economic mess. “Exporting low-quality clothing that has no value in our own society forges a relationship of dependency,” says Andrew Brooks at Kings College London. “You can call me idealistic, but I don’t really want to live in a world where people who are in the global south, the only clothes they can afford to buy are clothes you and I don’t want.”
It is essential that we help our kids focus on the most important elements of their lives while giving them enough breathing room to make their own path. Priorities will ebb and flow from one year to the next, but there are still vital aspects of childhood that shouldn’t be ignored for the satisfaction of public judgment. My son has worn that plaid-on-plaid outfit a few times and not once was he arrested by the fashion police or sent home from school. I still think he can become chief justice of the Supreme Court. After all, he might like the switch from his dad’s plaid-a-palooza to an all-black robe.

  1. Even as he followed his brother into this trend-driven, icon-imitating world, Abe worked to maintain his standard of idiosyncrasy, of standing out, freely incorporating floral patterns, vintage scarves, and the color pink into the outfits he wore into the heteronormative jaws of seventh grade. Small for his age—barely a men’s size XS—Abe often had trouble finding anything “fire,” in the way of menswear, that would fit him. So he would shop the women’s racks, with a sharply editorial eye; a women’s XS, he could make work. The Maison Margiela shirt he wore at the Off-White preview was womenswear, and he had chanced upon another favorite shirt, a Tigran Avetisyan, while browsing one of the women’s-clothing rooms at Opening Ceremony in L.A.
The blue halo is created by tiny, irregular striations—usually lined up in parallel fashion—and is found in all major groups of flowering plants pollinated by insects, the scientists report today in Nature.
Middle English fasoun, fasioun, fascioun, facioun, borrowed from Anglo-French façun, fauschoun “production, construction, appearance, form, sort, manner,” going back to Latin factiōn-, factiō “act of making,” from facere “to make, bring about, do” + -tiōn-, -tiō, suffix of verbal action — more at fact
