That was before J. Crew whiffed with the Tilly sweater, a wool top with a shrunken, cropped fit that sold so poorly, Drexler called it “a big mistake.” The sweater has become a notorious symbol for a J. Crew’s wider problems.

Sheer, mesh, and other translucent fabrics may have once been considered strictly nighttime wear, but no more. Think of Molly Goddard’s fantastically voluminous dresses and Dior’s dreamy maxi skirts—pieces that are elegant, playful, and, yes, see-through. So? When worn over a slip dress, or with plain trousers, or with a leather bustier, the overall look doesn’t necessarily say “risqué,” rather: chic.
Virgil Abloh asked Abe where he was from. Abe said that he was from Oakland. That was not quite true; Abe lived in Berkeley, one block from the Oakland-Berkeley line. Undoubtedly he thought, not without reason, that Oakland sounded, and was, cooler than Berkeley as a place for one to be from. Oakland was the Black Panthers, the impassive cartoon masks thrown up on freeway embankments by graffiti artist GATS, and heroes of hip-hop like Too Short, Mac Dre, Richie Rich, and the Hieroglyphics collective. Berkeley was bearded dudes wearing drug rugs and drawstring pants in the drum circle at the Ashby BART on Saturday mornings.
Anthropologie has posted four straight quarters of flat or declining “comparable sales,” a measure of results on its website and in its stores open more than a year. J. Crew’s comparable sales fell 10 percent last year and sank 8 percent in the first quarter of 2016. Banana Republic has seen a decline in comparable sales for the past 13 months, including a staggering 14 percent plunge in July. Gap’s sales are weak, and Ann Taylor’s have taken a gloomy turn recently, too.
Description For girls in 1964, drop-waist style dresses and two piece dresses proved popular fashion pieces. Stripes, bright and bold colors, and floral prints were fashionable. Tapered slacks and pullovers were great for casual wear, while dresses with bows and floral detail were good for formal wear.

Ms. Parker collaborated with Mr. Weinstein at Halston. “Over the last two decades, through various projects, I’ve always maintained a relationship with him that I was, for the most part, comfortable with,” she said. “Now I feel he is a stranger, that I didn’t know him at all. And desperately sad to hear how so many women have suffered.”
Look to the red carpet: There was Ruth Negga owning the last awards season in a series of generously sleeved frocks, and then showing up at the Oscars almost entirely covered in red Valentino — long sleeves, high neck, long skirt — and making pretty much every top 10 best-dressed list of the night. Ditto Jessica Biel (in long-sleeved, high-necked, floor-length gold KaufmanFranco) and Isabelle Huppert (in long-sleeved, crew-necked, floor-length white Armani Privé).
“This young man understands the idea, here,” Virgil Abloh told the reporters, pens poised over their notepads. “This is what I’m trying to do.” Abloh invited his assembled guests to consider Abe’s look from the ground up. The models were trying to suppress smiles now and not in all cases succeeding.
Fashion breathes on media and medium . The media plays a significant role when it comes to fashion. For instance, important part of fashion is fashion journalism. Editorial critique, guidelines, and commentary can be found on television and in magazines, newspapers, fashion websites, social networks, and fashion blogs. In recent years, fashion blogging and YouTube videos have become a major outlet for spreading trends and fashion tips, creating an online culture of sharing one’s style on a website or Instagram account. Through these media outlets readers and viewers all over the world can learn about fashion, making it very accessible.[46]
More recently gender-specific children’s clothing has become a contentious issue. According to some feminist thinkers, children’s clothing has become increasingly segregated, with young girls especially being expected to wear pink. Peggy Orenstein writes in her book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter, that pink-coloured and princess-themed clothes are almost ubiquitous for young girls in shops in America. She sees this as problematic because it limits girls to not only one colour, but also to one spectrum of experience, and it “firmly fuses girls’ identity to appearance.”[5] According to Historian Jo B. Paoletti, pink and blue only became associated with girls and boys respectively from the 1940s onwards.[6][7]
“I love the idea of dialogue, period. It’s where I’ve always gotten my inspiration from: hearing other women speak, their journeys and their paths,” said @hereisgina, who delivered the keynote speech during @sxsw for @createcultivate in partnership with @fossil. For her two panels, Rodriguez chose female empowering, female-led and female entrepreneurs to focus on. Head to WWD.com to read more about her thoughts on Time’s Up, growing up in a family of women and why we “need a girls’ club.” #wwdeye #sxsw (📷: @jgreenery)
Michael Fassbender is always dressed immaculately for the red carpet and has a great eye for tailoring. The fit of his suits is spot-on and his style is timeless. I think the fact he doesn’t have a stylist speaks volumes, and shows he’s genuinley into the clothes he wears.” Thom Widdett, co-founder, Thom Sweeney
Indeed, though The Modist, the name of Ms. Guenez’s website, is a clear nod to “modest,” it also denotes a “modiste,” a fashionable milliner or dressmaker. The conflation of references is less about wordplay than a reflection of our current reality, and the fact that these choices are not limited to a particular religious or ethnic group. After all, designers sold on the site include Maria Cornejo, Alberta Ferretti and Christopher Kane. Ms. Guenez herself, who was brought up in Algeria and educated at the London School of Economics, and who worked in private equity for 13 years before starting The Modist, did not begin dressing in a covered-up fashion until three years ago.

In a typical handgun injury, which I diagnose almost daily, a bullet leaves a laceration through an organ such as the liver. To a radiologist, it appears as a linear, thin, gray bullet track through the organ. There may be bleeding and some bullet fragments.
He had only vague, somewhat cartoonish notions about what constituted adult-male style, centered around certain key articles of clothing, chief among them fedoras, cardigans, button-front shirts, suspenders, and bow ties. He had a little tweed blazer that was a source of deep power for him, as deep as the power of the armor to Marvel’s Iron Man. It had a crest embroidered on a patch over the breast pocket and it made him very happy. By the third grade he was wearing his man costume to school almost every day. There had been teasing; one of his two little snap-brims would get snatched off his head now and then, and tossed around the playground. But the teasing had never exceeded Abe’s ability or willingness to withstand it, or the joy that he derived from losing himself in clothes. And his stubborn persistence had established a pattern that was thereafter repeated as his taste grew more refined and sophisticated: Little by little, one by one among the other boys in his class, fedoras would crop up, a porkpie here, a trilby there. It was not unusual to spot one of Abe’s former tormentors sporting a cardigan or a clip-on tie.
I was disappointed this vest did not fit. I normally wear a large. I did not see the sizing chart buried beneath all the info. The sizing might match the chart but it is not typical of other women’s clothing I have purchased. I am hoping I can work with the company to exchange the large for an extra large. The dusty pink is really “dusty” not very pink not even really rose. Still not a bad color. Otherwise, it is a lovely garment with lots of nice zipper details.
As she nears the end of her successful crowdfunding campaign, Shazia Ijaz is gearing up to launch “the world’s first streetwear brand for Muslim women.”However, dear PJ Media reader, please do not mistake Seek Refuge, the name of Ijaz’ clothing company, with the myriad other modest fashion lines developed for Muslim women. Ijaz told Religion News Service that she doesn’t want to compete with the modest fashion lines for Muslim women that have already hit the market. Instead, according to Ijaz, “We’re saying this is a brand for Muslim women regardless of the level of modesty they follow.”Okay. Um. My head hurts now because advertising to Muslim women “regardless of the level of modesty they follow” is the very definition of competing with other modest fashion lines targeting Muslim women. But I’m getting ahead of my mansplaining self.RNS’s interview with Ijaz reveals the reason for her desire to not compete with other modest Muslim fashion lines:

  1. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, charities overall sell only 20 percent of the clothing donated to them at their retail outlets. All the big charities I contacted asserted that they sell more than that—30 percent at Goodwill, 45 to 75 percent at the Salvation Army and 40 percent at Housing Works, to give a few examples. This disparity is probably because, unlike small charity shops, these larger organizations have well-developed systems for processing clothing. If items don’t sell in the main retail store, they can send them to their outlets, where customers can walk out with a bag full of clothing for just a few dollars. But even at that laughably cheap price, they can’t sell everything.
“Most American fashion is based on older women trying to look like babies,” he told a writer for The New Yorker, taking a swipe at Claire McCardell and others who designed adult play clothes. “We’ve reversed the process.” But Mr. James did not mean miniatures. What astonishes about his designs (you can see them online) is just how thoroughly childlike, in shape and detail, they were. The Jamesian magic was in the execution.
